These turbochargers with water-cooled aluminum or cast steel turbine housings have been in large-scale serial production since 2014. Since 2015, the BMW Group’s 1.5-liter gasoline engines equipped with these turbocharger models have constantly received various honors at the International Engine + Powertrain of the Year Awards, among others as International Engine of the Year and in the 1.4 – 1.8-liter or 150 hp classes.

Water-cooled aluminum housing

Continental has been using the most cutting-edge and efficient turbocharger technology for years. One pioneering innovation is the water-cooled turbine housing made of aluminum, which was developed in cooperation with the BMW Group. It’s almost 30 % lighter than conventional turbine housings and offers clear system advantages plus maximum torque, consumption and emissions efficiency:

• The housing surface stays cooler, eliminating the need for heat protection of adjacent components.
• The catalytic converter is heated very quickly by the electric wastegate actuator, and at the same time subjected to a lower thermal load thanks to the cooling of the exhaust gas flow.
• This significantly increases the service life of the turbocharger.
